As
kriski pointed out in her entry, sometimes one of the downsides of snail mail in this internet age is that you write a letter, but carry on the conversation through other more responsive media. Where does that leave the original letter you wrote? Is it obsolete or just the beginning of a conversation that has evolved?
Another problem people sometimes have is they don't know what to say or how to start. This is especially true if you carry on a lot of phone or internet conversations. You start to feel like you've said it all about your job, your life, the weather.
For the rest of this month here's a topic you can use if you aren't sure what to say. Pick someone you know, maybe a friend or family member in "Real Life" or someone from your Friends' List. It can be someone you see regularly or someone who lives on the other side of the world from you.
Write a card or letter to that person. Tell them about something good from your past. Talk about a happy memory, a favourite toy, a pet, a special place. Tell them about a dream you had or an irrational fear. It doesn't matter what age you were, so if you want to talk about what you bought with your first paycheck or your favorite class in university that's fine too! It doesn't have to be a long letter. You can write to more than one person if you want, either the same thing or something different. Just don't forget to send them!
You don't have to use this idea, but if you are thinking about jumping on the snail mail bandwagon and aren't sure where to start this might help.
Once you've done this, come back and tell us about it. You don't have to tell us what you wrote (it might be better if you don't, especially if you are writing to someone on your friends' list!), but at least tell us if you've written a letter or card or how many. We'll try to put a topic up once a month to encourage people to write at least one piece of snail mail once a month. I've found it to be a relaxing and meditative ritual to do a couple of Sunday mornings a month. I sit for about half an hour to an hour and can usually get a couple of post cards or a letter and couple post cards out depending on what I write and for how long.
